Summary

Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) without ureteral stents is safe and effective for localized kidney tumors. This study shows good outcomes with low complication rates in selected patients.

Background:

  • Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is a common procedure for kidney tumors.
  • The use of ureteral stents during RAPN is debated.
  • This study evaluates the outcomes of RAPN performed without ureteral stents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the results of robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) performed without ureteral stents.
  • To assess the safety and feasibility of this technique in a single Turkish center.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 45 patients who underwent RAPN for kidney lesions between March 2011 and December 2014.
  • All procedures were performed using a transperitoneal approach without ureteral stents.
  • Renal artery clamping and intraoperative ultrasonography were utilized as needed.

Main Results:

  • The mean tumor size was 4.42 cm, with a mean nephrometry score of 5.82.
  • No significant difference in preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine levels was observed.
  • Surgical margin positivity was absent, with a mean margin distance of 0.4 mm. The complication rate was 11.1%.

Conclusions:

  • Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) without ureteral stents is a safe and feasible option for selected patients with localized renal tumors.
  • Adequate surgical experience and patient selection are crucial for successful outcomes.
