    Background:

    • Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in various autoimmune conditions.
    • The relationship between vitamin D levels and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if vitamin D deficiency is associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT).
    • To compare vitamin D levels and sufficiency rates between HT patients and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured in HT patients and controls.
    • Groups were stratified by sex and controlled for age and BMI.
    • Statistical analyses included ANOVA for mean levels and Z-tests for frequency distributions.

    Main Results:

    • Females with HT showed significantly higher mean 25(OH)D levels and a greater rate of vitamin D sufficiency compared to female controls.
    • No significant differences in 25(OH)D levels or sufficiency were observed between males with HT and male controls.
    • A positive correlation was found between 25(OH)D and thyroid-peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) in males.

    Conclusions:

    • Hashimoto thyroiditis is not associated with higher rates of vitamin D deficiency.
    • Sex-specific differences in vitamin D levels and their association with HT warrant further research.
