Summary

Salivary testosterone levels in patients with prostate cancer were significantly lower after orchiectomy, similar to normal females. This measurement may help assess androgenic function post-treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Urology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Prostatic carcinoma (prostate cancer) is often treated with orchiectomy to reduce testosterone levels.
  • Assessing androgenic function is crucial for monitoring treatment efficacy and patient health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate salivary testosterone concentrations in patients with prostate cancer following orchiectomy.
  • To determine the utility of salivary testosterone measurements in assessing androgenic function post-treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Salivary testosterone concentrations were measured in 13 patients with prostatic carcinoma.
  • Measurements were taken after surgical or medical orchiectomy (using diethylstilboestrol or Estracyt).
  • Data were collected over 6 consecutive months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Salivary testosterone levels in patients were significantly lower than in normal males.
  • Testosterone levels were not significantly different from those in normal females.
  • Monthly testosterone concentrations showed no significant variation.

Conclusions:

  • Salivary testosterone measurement is a potentially useful tool for evaluating androgenic function in prostate cancer patients post-orchiectomy.
  • This non-invasive method could aid in monitoring the effects of androgen deprivation therapy.
