An intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration complicated by Exophiala fungus infection and broncholiths was identified. Imaging revealed a calcified mass, confirmed by pathology in the sequestered lung segment.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Medical Mycology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital lung malformation.
  • Complications can arise, but fungal infections and broncholithiasis are infrequent.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a lung mass in the posterior basal segment of the left lower lobe.
  • Imaging studies including chest tomography and computed tomography demonstrated numerous round calcifications within the mass.

Findings:

  • Pathologic examination revealed an Exophiala fungus infection within the sequestered lung segment.
  • Broncholiths were also identified within bronchiectatic cavities in the affected area.

Implications:

  • This case highlights an unusual complication of intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It underscores the importance of considering fungal infections and broncholithiasis in the differential diagnosis of calcified lung masses.
