Nursing Technology Adoption

Background:

Healthcare organizations increasingly use barcode technology for improved patient care and efficiency.
Barcode systems are commonly applied in patient identification, medication administration, and specimen collection.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore nurses' acceptance of barcode technology using the Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Diffusion Theory.
Investigate factors influencing the adoption of barcode technology in clinical settings.

Main Methods:

A structured questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Diffusion Theory was administered to 200 nurses.
Data collection occurred between March and May 2014, including laboratory reporting times and specimen rejection rates.

Main Results:

Perceived usefulness (r=.722) and perceived ease of use (r=.720) were key factors in barcode technology acceptance.
N-level nurses showed higher acceptance than N1 and N2 levels (p<.05).
Laboratory reporting time decreased by 109 minutes (p<.05), and specimen rejection rates fell from 2.18% to 0.28% (p<.05).

Conclusions:

Barcode technology is accepted by nurses and demonstrably reduces laboratory reporting times and specimen rejection rates.
Optimizing network speed and workflow is recommended to maximize clinical benefits of barcode technology.
