Background:

  • A novel risk assessment tool, the Variable Lifting Index (VLI), has been developed for variable manual lifting tasks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of the Variable Lifting Index (VLI) in predicting the risk of acute low-back pain (LBP) within the past 12 months.
  • To evaluate the VLI's correlation with LBP risk based on its theoretical foundation in the Revised National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] Lifting Equation (RNLE).

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 3,402 participants from 16 companies across various industries was analyzed.
  • The study included 2,374 participants in a manual materials handling (MMH) exposure group and 1,028 in a control group.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for LBP risk associated with VLI levels, adjusting for BMI, gender, and age.

Main Results:

  • A significant dose-response relationship was observed between VLI levels and LBP risk.
  • The risk of LBP increased as VLI levels increased, with a notable association found when VLI exceeded 1.
  • Both crude and adjusted odds ratios supported the VLI's predictive capability for LBP.

  • The Variable Lifting Index (VLI) demonstrates utility in assessing the risk of acute low-back pain (LBP).
  • Further research is recommended to validate these findings and refine VLI categorization for enhanced occupational safety applications.
