Summary

Pre-selection using equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) can identify Saanen does likely to respond well to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) superovulatory protocols. Ultrasound evaluation before FSH treatment is crucial for identifying high-response donors in goat programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of pre-selecting Saanen does as high or low responders before superovulatory protocols.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) as a screening tool for predicting response to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
  • To determine the relationship between initial follicular status and ovulatory response.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty Saanen does were subjected to long-term progestogen treatment followed by eCG or FSH superovulatory protocols.
  • Transrectal ultrasound was employed to monitor follicular dynamics and count corpora lutea (CL) at various stages.
  • Statistical analyses, including regression and correlation coefficients (Kappa, Spearman), were used to assess treatment responses and follicular status relationships.

Main Results:

  • FSH treatment resulted in a significantly higher number of CL compared to eCG treatment (p < 0.05).
  • Seventy percent of does maintained a consistent ovulatory response (high or low) across treatments, indicating predictive value.
  • Follicular status, particularly the number of small and total follicles at eCG and initial FSH doses, significantly correlated with CL count.

Conclusions:

  • Equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) shows potential as a screening method to identify Saanen does that will respond better to FSH superovulatory protocols.
  • Ultrasound evaluation prior to FSH treatment is vital for characterizing follicular status and selecting optimal donors for Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) programs.
  • This study supports the use of pre-treatment screening to enhance the efficiency of superovulatory protocols in goats.
