Summary

Epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery significantly improves visual acuity and reduces visual disturbance. Patients with greater preoperative visual impairment experience the most benefit from ERM peeling surgery.

  • Postoperative VA significantly improved compared to preoperative VA (0.22 vs 0.40 logMAR).
  • Subjective visual disturbance decreased significantly post-surgery (median VAS 27 mm vs 70 mm).
  • Greater preoperative visual disturbance correlated with greater subjective benefit from surgery.

Conclusions:

  • ERM surgery leads to significant improvements in both objective visual acuity and subjective visual function.
  • Patients experiencing substantial preoperative visual disturbance report the most benefit from ERM peeling.
