The Oral Microbiota01:27

The Oral Microbiota

7
The oral microbiome includes a complex ecosystem comprising over 700 microbial species, identified through genomic sequencing and culture-based analyses to date. This community includes a core microbiome, found universally among individuals, and a variable component influenced by environmental factors such as diet, lifestyle, and host genetics. Site-specific conditions, including oxygen gradients, pH levels, and nutrient availability, determine the spatial distribution of these microorganisms...

Microbiota of the Respiratory Tract01:29

Microbiota of the Respiratory Tract

1
The human respiratory tract, comprising the upper and lower segments, serves as a critical interface with the external environment. The upper respiratory tract (URT)—including the nostrils, sinuses, pharynx, and oropharynx—is heavily colonized by microbes, while the lower respiratory tract (LRT), composed of the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs, was long thought to be sterile. However, recent molecular studies have revealed that the lungs are not devoid of microbes but act more...

Summary

Periodontitis, an oral condition, is linked to a higher likelihood of developing allergic rhinitis (AR). This study suggests physicians should monitor AR patients for potential periodontitis risk.

Area of Science:

  • Oral health and immunology
  • Epidemiology of chronic diseases

Background:

  • Limited understanding of the link between periodontitis and nasal diseases.
  • Periodontitis is a common oral inflammatory condition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontitis and a history of allergic rhinitis (AR).
  • Utilize a population-based dataset from Taiwan for a matched case-control study.

Main Methods:

  • Employed a matched case-control design using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000.
  • Included 71,182 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and 71,182 controls.
  • Generalized linear mixed-model analyses were used to determine odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs).

Main Results:

  • A higher prevalence of prior AR was observed in periodontitis patients (28.4%) compared to controls (24.2%).
  • The adjusted OR for previous AR in periodontitis patients was 1.21 (95% CI: 1.18–1.23), indicating a significant association.
  • Statistical adjustments accounted for various demographic and health factors.

Conclusions:

  • A clear association exists between periodontitis and a history of allergic rhinitis.
  • Healthcare providers should consider the risk of periodontitis in patients diagnosed with AR.
