    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Oncology
    • Reproductive Health

    Context:

    • Acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) is a significant childhood cancer.
    • Long-term survival in ALL survivors raises questions about reproductive health.
    • Few studies address pregnancy outcomes in young female ALL survivors.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of pregnancies in girls treated for acute lymphoid leukemia.
    • To assess the long-term health of both the mothers and their offspring.

    Summary:

    • Five girls, aged 7-13 years, with ALL in remission became pregnant after 2.5 years of maintenance therapy.
    • Eight pregnancies resulted in 4 live births and 4 terminations (weeks 7-14).
    • Mothers generally maintained remission; survival ranged from 12.5-15 years. One newborn had mild hip dysplasia; offspring developed healthily.

    Impact:

    • Demonstrates the feasibility of pregnancy in young female ALL survivors.
    • Provides evidence for favorable maternal and child health outcomes post-leukemia treatment.
    • Informs counseling and management strategies for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.
