    Summary

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor of the adrenal medulla.
    • Ischemic enterocolitis is a severe condition involving intestinal tissue death.
    • This complication is rarely reported in patients with pheochromocytoma.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with pheochromocytoma presented with pre-operative ischemic enterocolitis.
    • The condition involved widespread hemorrhagic necrosis of the gut.
    • This was attributed to catecholamine-induced vasoconstriction of mesenteric vessels.

    Findings:

    • Both patients survived the acute ischemic mesenteric event.
    • Both patients also survived the subsequent surgical excision of the pheochromocytoma.
    • This suggests that even severe ischemic enterocolitis may be survivable in this context.

    Implications:

    • Early recognition and management of ischemic enterocolitis in pheochromocytoma patients are crucial.
    • Aggressive treatment may lead to favorable outcomes despite the severity of the complication.
    • Further research into the pathophysiology and management strategies is warranted.
