Summary

A less-invasive surgical technique successfully removed retained testicles in pigs. This on-farm method, previously used in horses, dogs, and cats, proved highly effective for cryptorchid pigs.

Background:

  • Cryptorchidism, the retention of one or both testicles, is common in pigs.
  • Surgical correction is often necessary for health and economic reasons.
  • Existing less-invasive techniques are established in horses, dogs, and cats.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a less-invasive surgical technique for removing retained testicles in pigs under on-farm conditions.
  • To adapt and apply a surgical method successful in other species to swine.

Main Methods:

  • 284 monolateral cryptorchid pigs underwent on-farm surgery.
  • An incision was made over the inguinal ring to access and exteriorize the undescended testicle.
  • Identification and traction of the vaginal process and gubernaculum facilitated testis removal.

Main Results:

  • The undescended testicle was abdominal in 90.8% and inguinal in 9.1% of cases.
  • No abdominal cavity breaches or enlarged inguinal rings occurred.
  • A low complication rate (8.1% minor gubernaculum issues, 0.7% testicle not found, 1.4% mortality) was observed.

Conclusions:

  • The less-invasive surgical technique is highly effective for cryptorchid pigs.
  • This method can be a primary surgical approach for retained testicles in swine.
  • Successful adaptation of the technique from horses, dogs, and cats to pigs was demonstrated.
