Background:

  • Hearing screening programs aim to reduce operating costs, including equipment expenses.
  • The Telessaúde (TS) audiometer offers a low-cost, software-based, and user-friendly alternative for audiometric screening.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the TS audiometer for conducting audiometric screening.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized study involved 60 subjects, divided into those without (Group A) and with (Group B) otologic complaints.
  • Subjects underwent screening with both conventional and TS audiometers.
  • Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the TS audiometer were calculated.

Main Results:

  • Agreement between TS and conventional audiometers ranged from 93% to 98%.
  • For subjects with otologic complaints (Group B), the TS audiometer showed 95.5% sensitivity and 90.4% specificity.
  • Positive and negative predictive values for the TS audiometer in Group B were 94.9% and 91.5%, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • The TS audiometer yields results comparable to conventional audiometers.
  • The TS audiometer is a viable option for effective audiometric screening.
