Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a link between occupational sedentary behavior and adverse health outcomes.

  • A cohort of 203 professional workers in low physical activity jobs was recruited.
  • Baseline and 12-month follow-up measurements included anthropometrics, metabolic markers, and accelerometry-assessed physical activity and sedentary time.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to determine the predictive value of sedentary behavior on incident MS and changes in cardiometabolic risk scores.

Conclusions:

  • Professional workers in low physical activity roles are at elevated risk for cardiometabolic disorders due to high levels of sedentary behavior.
  • Sedentary behavior is a modifiable risk factor that contributes to the development of metabolic syndrome and related conditions.
  • Interventions aimed at reducing sedentary time are warranted for this occupational group to mitigate long-term health risks.
