Triarchic Theory of Intelligence01:24

Triarchic Theory of Intelligence

10.6K
Robert Sternberg's triarchic theory of intelligence posits that intelligence is composed of three distinct but interrelated components: analytical, creative, and practical intelligence.

Intelligence

9.1K
The term "intelligence" is complex because it refers to both behavior and individuals, and its interpretation varies across cultures. European Americans tend to link intelligence with reasoning and cognitive skills, while in Kenya, it is tied to responsible participation in family and social life. In Uganda, intelligence is seen as the ability to know the right actions and carry them out effectively, while the Iatmul people of Papua New Guinea associate it with the capacity to remember...

Dark Triad and Person Perception

404
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Measures of Intelligence

8.8K
Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this;...

Implicit Personality Theories01:23

Implicit Personality Theories

599
Implicit personality theory explains how individuals make assumptions about the relationships between personality traits, behaviors, and character types. When people learn that someone possesses a particular trait, they tend to infer the presence of other related characteristics, forming a cohesive impression. This cognitive shortcut plays a crucial role in social interactions and interpersonal judgments.Central Traits and Their InfluenceSolomon Asch's seminal 1946 study highlighted the power...

Biological Influences on Intelligence01:30

Biological Influences on Intelligence

648
Intelligence is often thought to be linked to brain size, but the relationship is more complex than that. While brain size does correlate modestly with some abilities, like verbal skills, the connection is weaker for others, such as spatial reasoning. Other factors, like brain structure, also play crucial roles. For instance, despite Einstein's smaller-than-average brain, his parietal cortex, which is involved in spatial reasoning, was 15% wider, suggesting that neural density might matter...

Summary

This study found weak links between psychopathy and intelligence (both cognitive and emotional) in undergraduates. While intelligence may protect against antisocial behavior in high psychopathy individuals, the overall association is less robust than often portrayed.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Intelligence Studies

Background:

  • Psychopathy is commonly perceived as linked to higher intelligence.
  • Empirical evidence supporting this association remains mixed and inconclusive.
  • Previous research often lacks a nuanced examination of different intelligence facets.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between psychopathy and various intelligence measures.
  • To differentiate between cognitively based intelligence (CBI) and emotional intelligence (EI).
  • To explore intelligence as a potential moderator of antisocial behavior in psychopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a large undergraduate sample (N = 1,257).
  • Assessed psychopathy using a fine-grained, dimensional approach.
  • Measured multiple indices of both cognitively based intelligence and emotional intelligence.

Main Results:

  • Found minimal associations between psychopathy dimensions and cognitively based intelligence measures.
  • Observed negative correlations between most psychopathy dimensions and emotional intelligence.
  • Identified some evidence for intelligence acting as a buffer against antisocial behavior in high psychopathy individuals.

Conclusions:

  • The link between psychopathy and intelligence appears weaker than commonly assumed, particularly in undergraduate populations.
  • Specific dimensions of psychopathy (Fearless Dominance, Coldheartedness) showed varied associations with emotional intelligence.
  • Findings suggest a need to re-evaluate theoretical models on psychopathy and intelligence.
