Summary

Occipital bending, a twisting of the occipital lobe, is nearly three times more common in schizophrenia patients than in healthy individuals. This finding suggests occipital bending may serve as a potential marker for psychiatric illness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of occipital bending in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.
  • To compare the prevalence of occipital bending between schizophrenia patients and matched healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed.
  • Occipital bending was assessed in 37 patients with schizophrenia and 44 healthy controls.
  • Neuroimaging data were analyzed to compare gray matter and white matter volumes and brain-to-cranial ratio.
