Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) is a narrow-bandgap semiconductor with potential applications in various fields.
  • Developing biocompatible and water-soluble nanomaterials is crucial for biomedical applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize novel chitosan-functionalized bismuth sulfide quantum dots (Bi2S3 QDs) using a green aqueous route.
  • To evaluate the photoluminescent properties, biocompatibility, and potential for bioimaging of these nanoconjugates.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of Bi2S3 QDs using a green aqueous route at room temperature.
  • Characterization using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and Zeta Potential (ZP) analysis.
  • In vitro cytotoxicity assay (MTT) using human osteosarcoma cells (SAOS) and cell uptake studies with HEK293T cells.

Main Results:

  • Chitosan (CHI) effectively controlled the nucleation and growth of water-soluble Bi2S3 nanoparticles (4.2–6.7 nm).
  • The synthesized Bi2S3 QDs exhibited photoluminescence in the visible spectrum.
  • Bi2S3 QD-CHI nanoconjugates showed no significant cytotoxicity in SAOS cells and demonstrated uptake in HEK293T cells.

Conclusions:

  • Chitosan-functionalized Bi2S3 QDs are biocompatible and photoluminescent nanomaterials.
  • These nanoconjugates hold promise as fluorescent nanoprobes for in vitro bioimaging in biomedical applications.
