Background:

  • Lateral trunk flexion (LTF) is a frequent characteristic in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Emerging evidence links LTF in PD to peripheral vestibular system impairments.
  • Subjective visual vertical (SVV) deviation is a known indicator of vestibular processing disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between vestibular dysfunction and LTF in Parkinson's disease.
  • To determine if SVV deviation is associated with the presence and severity of LTF in PD patients.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed SVV angles in 30 Parkinson's disease patients using a bedside test.
  • Compared SVV angles between PD patients with and without LTF.
  • Categorized LTF as reversible or fixed.

Main Results:

  • PD patients exhibiting LTF had significantly larger SVV angles compared to those without LTF (p < 0.001).
  • Pathological SVV was observed in 14 out of 21 patients with LTF, versus none of the 9 patients without LTF.
  • Abnormal SVV was more prevalent in cases of reversible LTF.

Conclusions:

  • Pathological SVV in PD patients with LTF indicates vestibular dysbalance.
  • Vestibular dysfunction may play a role in the pathophysiology of LTF in Parkinson's disease.
