Background:

  • Human lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties.
  • Its presence and role in the feto-maternal environment during pregnancy are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify human lactoferrin (LF) concentrations in various pregnancy-related tissues and fluids.
  • To investigate the potential origin and gestational changes of LF.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay and non-competitive avidin-biotin assay were used for LF quantification.
  • Samples included amniotic fluid, cord blood, decidua, trophoblast, fetal membranes, and umbilical cord.
  • Samples were collected via amniocentesis and after delivery (vaginal or Cesarean section).

Main Results:

  • LF was undetectable in amniotic fluid before 20 weeks of gestation.
  • LF concentration significantly increased around week 30 and remained high until term.
