  • Mayo Clinic in Florida developed a YouTube video playlist to simulate a virtual hospital experience for hip and knee replacement patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a YouTube video playlist on preoperative anxiety in joint replacement patients.
  • To assess if a virtual hospital experience can mitigate patient anxiety before surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized trial was conducted with 53 patients undergoing hip or knee replacement.
  • Patients were randomized to standard education or standard education plus access to a YouTube playlist.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) scores were assessed before and on the day of surgery.

Main Results:

  • A trend toward reduced anxiety was observed in the group viewing the YouTube playlist (median GAD score reduction of 1 point).
  • Patients with high preoperative anxiety, predominantly women, showed a more significant reduction in GAD scores (6 points) in the treatment group.
  • The study achieved an 82% completion rate, with 97% in the control group and 69% in the treatment group.

Conclusions:

  • A series of tailored videos may decrease preoperative patient anxiety.
  • Further research into this concept and the use of social media in preoperative patient education is recommended.
