Summary

Rotavirus circulation significantly decreased in Dutch preschoolers from 2010-2013 to 2014. This decline indicates a genuine reduction in rotavirus, not milder illness, as no vaccination program was in place.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze rotavirus detection rates in preschool children in the Netherlands.
  • To compare detection rates across multiple years to identify trends in rotavirus circulation.
  • To determine if observed changes were due to reduced circulation or milder disease.

Main Methods:

  • Surveillance data of rotavirus detection in preschool children was collected.
  • Sampling occurred irrespective of symptoms during the defined rotavirus season (January-April).
