Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Malignant tumors of the lateral skull base present significant management challenges.
  • Surgical intervention is a primary treatment modality for these complex cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of lateral skull base resection for cancer.
  • To assess the impact of surgical management on patient palliation and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 62 patients undergoing lateral skull base resection for malignancy.
  • Preoperative evaluation included neurotologic examination, CT, MRI, and carotid angiography.
  • Surgical resection involved en bloc removal of tumors with adjacent structures, followed by myocutaneous flap reconstruction.

Main Results:

  • The study included 62 patients with lateral skull base cancer.
  • Surgical defects were reconstructed using pectoralis and/or rhombotrapezius myocutaneous flaps.
  • Overall cure rates were not significantly improved, but palliative benefits were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Lateral skull base resection, while not improving cure rates, offers significant palliative benefits.
  • Patients with lateral skull base malignancies experience an improved quality of life and extended palliation following surgical management.
