Patient Outcomes when Housestaff Exceed 80 Hours per Week

Long resident work hours (over 80 hours/week) correlate with increased patient length of stay and intensive care unit (ICU) transfers. However, these extended duty hours did not significantly impact in-hospital mortality or 30-day readmission rates.
