A new 10-item coping self-efficacy scale for health problems (SEH) was developed and validated. This reliable and valid instrument can measure patient self-efficacy in managing health issues.
Area of Science:
- Health Psychology
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Coping self-efficacy is crucial for patients managing health problems.
- Existing instruments may not fully capture this construct.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and validate an instrument to measure coping self-efficacy in patients with health problems.
- To assess the psychometric properties of the new scale.
Main Methods:
- A 10-item coping self-efficacy scale for health problems (SEH) was developed.
- 2784 individuals from primary healthcare centers in Spain were surveyed.
- Reliability, validity, and ability to detect changes in healthcare resource use were statistically analyzed.
Main Results:
- The 10-item SEH scale demonstrated confirmed reliability and validity.
- The scale was found to be efficacious in detecting changes in the use of specific health resources.
Conclusions:
- The SEH scale meets relevant psychometric requirements.
- The SEH scale possesses general utility for assessing coping self-efficacy in diverse patient populations.
