Background:

  • Alzheimer's disease, a form of senile dementia, is characterized by progressive cognitive decline.
  • Apraxia, a disorder of skilled motor movements, can occur in neurodegenerative conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and characteristics of apraxia in patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT).
  • To determine which types of movements are most affected in SDAT patients.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 28 patients with SDAT and compared their performance on ideomotor and ideational apraxia tests with age-matched controls.
  • Assessed pantomiming of limb transitive, limb intransitive, buccofacial, and axial movements.
  • Evaluated performance under verbal command, imitation, and with actual objects.

Main Results:

  • SDAT patients demonstrated impairments in ideomotor and ideational apraxia compared to controls.
  • Limb transitive movements were significantly more impaired than limb intransitive, buccofacial, and axial movements.
  • Patients made body part as object and spatial errors when pantomiming, and improved with real objects.

Conclusions:

  • Apraxia in SDAT patients is qualitatively similar to apraxic syndromes seen after left parietal damage.
  • The findings suggest posterior left hemisphere cortical involvement in SDAT.
  • Apraxia may be present in SDAT even when language functions remain relatively intact.
