Myxedema pseudovolvulus, a rare sigmoid volvulus complication of hypothyroidism, is presented. A young male with abdominal pain was diagnosed with sigmoid volvulus and severe hypothyroidism post-surgery.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Case Report
Background:
- Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder.
- Sigmoid volvulus is a surgical emergency involving colon twisting.
- Myxedema pseudovolvulus, a rare presentation of hypothyroidism, links these conditions.
Observation:
- A male patient in his late thirties presented with abdominal pain.
- CT scan revealed massive colonic dilatation and sigmoid volvulus.
- Surgical exploration confirmed sigmoid volvulus, necessitating segmental resection.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism postoperatively.
- This case highlights a rare association between hypothyroidism and sigmoid volvulus.
Implications:
- Recognizing myxedema pseudovolvulus is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism.
- This case underscores the importance of considering endocrine disorders in gastrointestinal emergencies.
- Further research may elucidate the pathophysiology linking hypothyroidism and bowel motility issues.
