Background:

Agoraphobia is often associated with panic attacks, but the specific psychological differences between individuals with and without current panic attacks require further elucidation.
Understanding these differences is crucial for targeted therapeutic interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the psychological profiles of agoraphobics with and without current panic attacks using the MMPI and SCL-90-R.
To identify specific psychometric markers associated with the presence of panic attacks in agoraphobia.

Main Methods:

The study involved administering the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) to individuals diagnosed with agoraphobia.
Participants were divided into two groups: those with current panic attacks and those without.

Main Results:

Agoraphobics with current panic attacks exhibited significantly higher scores on the Psychopathic Deviate (4), Psychasthenia (7), and Social Introversion (0) scales of the MMPI.
On the SCL-90-R, the group with panic attacks reported elevated scores in Interpersonal Sensitivity, Anxiety, Phobic Anxiety, and overall symptom severity (Total/90).

Conclusions:

The findings suggest that the presence of current panic attacks in agoraphobia is associated with a specific pattern of psychological distress.
These differences in MMPI and SCL-90-R profiles may inform differential diagnosis and treatment strategies for agoraphobia.
