Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are...

Color Vision01:24

Color Vision

1.9K
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives

4.1K
The first thing a clinician sees is the skin, so the examination of the skin should be part of any thorough physical examination. Most skin disorders are relatively benign, but a few, including melanomas, can be fatal if untreated. A couple of the more noticeable disorders, albinism and vitiligo, affect the appearance of the skin and its accessory organs.

Albinism is a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. The defect is primarily...

Variables Affecting Phosphorescence and Fluorescence01:26

Variables Affecting Phosphorescence and Fluorescence

1.8K
Fluorescence and phosphorescence are essential phenomena in fields like analytical chemistry, biological imaging, and materials science, where they detect molecular properties and visualize cellular structures. Understanding the variables that influence these luminescent behaviors is crucial for maximizing accuracy and efficiency in their applications. These variables can broadly be grouped into chemical structure, solvent properties, and external conditions, each playing a distinct role in...

pH Regulation in Cells01:28

pH Regulation in Cells

8.0K
pH plays a critical role in maintaining normal cellular activities. It helps maintain the structure and function of various proteins, dictates the charge on cellular membranes, and is crucial for metabolic reactions inside the cell. Moreover, cells use the energy from the proton motive force to generate ATP.
Cytosolic pH
Under physiological conditions, the cytosolic pH is slightly more acidic than the extracellular pH. However, cells must prevent further acidification of their cytosol to...

Color in Coordination Complexes
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...

Summary

Structural colored balloons (SCBs) made of poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-styrene) (P4VP-PS) show pH-dependent color changes. Their diameter and shell thickness adjust with pH, altering color in response to acidity and p-toluenesulfonic acid.

Area of Science:

  • Polymer Science
  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Structural colored balloons (SCBs) are advanced materials that display color through physical structure, not pigments.
  • Poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-styrene) (P4VP-PS) is a versatile copolymer with potential applications in responsive materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the pH-responsive structural color changes in P4VP-PS SCBs.
  • To understand the relationship between pH, SCB dimensions, and color variation.
  • To explore the influence of p-toluenesulfonic acid on SCB behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-styrene) (P4VP-PS) based SCBs.
  • Exposure of SCBs to varying pH conditions (acidic and neutral).
  • Observation and analysis of structural color changes and dimensional variations.

Main Results:

  • SCBs demonstrated a distinct pH-controlled structural color change.
  • The diameter of SCBs increased under acidic conditions and decreased under neutral conditions.
  • Color shifts were attributed to changes in shell thickness, influenced by diameter and p-toluenesulfonic acid uptake.

Conclusions:

  • P4VP-PS SCBs exhibit tunable structural color in response to pH.
  • The observed color changes are linked to reversible swelling/deswelling and ion incorporation.
  • These findings highlight the potential of P4VP-PS SCBs for pH-sensing applications.
