Background:

  • Perilymph fistula (PLF) is a rare condition causing vertigo and hearing loss.
  • Surgical repair is an option for managing PLF symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of surgical repair for perilymph fistula.
  • To assess patient experiences following PLF surgery in Norfolk, UK.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 14 patients undergoing 20 PLF repairs (1998-2012).
  • Utilized patient surveys and case note review.
  • Pre- and post-operative Vertigo Symptom Scale (VSS) scores were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in VSS scores was observed post-surgery (median 67 to 19).
  • Precipitating factors included pressure events (6), trauma (2), and noise (1); 5 cases had no clear cause.
  • Seven patients completed pre- and post-operative VSS assessments.

Conclusions:

  • Perilymph fistula should be considered in selected vertigo patients.
  • Surgical repair offers significant symptom improvement for PLF.
