Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

1.6K
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Summary

The Truevision 3-D system and manual marking methods show similar accuracy for aligning toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) during femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. This finding supports both techniques for precise toric IOL implantation.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Technology
  • Optics

Background:

  • Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) correct astigmatism during cataract surgery.
  • Accurate alignment of toric IOLs is crucial for effective visual outcomes.
  • Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery offers precision in corneal and capsular incisions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of toric IOL alignment using the Truevision 3-dimensional (3-D) computer-guided visualization system versus a manual marking method.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of femtosecond laser-created intrastromal marks for toric IOL guidance.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective comparative case series was conducted.
  • Preoperative corneal topography data informed the 3-D system's optimized toric IOL alignment plan.
  • Femtosecond laser intrastromal marks were created, guided by manual limbal ink marks.

Main Results:

  • The mean 3-D imaging error was -0.58 ± 3.90 degrees, and the mean manual ink error was -0.27 ± 3.65 degrees.
  • Neither method showed a statistically significant deviation from zero.
  • Mean absolute errors were comparable: 2.96 ± 2.54 degrees for the 3-D system and 2.88 ± 2.18 degrees for manual marking.

Conclusions:

  • The Truevision 3-D computer-guided system and manual marking with femtosecond laser marks demonstrate similar accuracy for toric IOL alignment.
  • Both methods are viable options for achieving precise toric IOL placement in cataract surgery.
