Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

6.6K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

5.4K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...

Skin Diseases and Disorders

6.1K
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

Cancer Prevention

8.6K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Autoimmune Disorders01:29

Autoimmune Disorders

2.1K
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

Summary

Systemic sclerosis patients have an increased cancer risk, with bladder cancer being most common. Early tumor detection through continuous screening is essential for managing malignancies in SSc patients.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Oncology
  • Autoimmune Diseases

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem autoimmune disease.
  • Previous reports indicate a higher cancer incidence in SSc patients compared to the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify common malignancies in SSc patients.
  • To investigate potential risk factors for cancer development in SSc.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of medical records from 340 SSc patients across 13 centers.
  • Evaluation of patient data to identify cancer types and associated factors.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-five out of 340 SSc patients (7.35%) were diagnosed with 19 different types of malignancy.
  • Bladder cancer was the most frequent (4 patients), followed by breast cancer (3 patients).
  • Cyclophosphamide dose was the only identified risk factor, specifically associated with bladder carcinoma.

Conclusions:

  • Malignancies can occur in any organ system in SSc patients.
  • Continuous screening and early detection are crucial for managing cancer risk in SSc.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand cancer etiology in SSc.
