    Background:

    • The Scott Air Pak (SAP) respirator is used in environments requiring respiratory protection.
    • Its impact on physical performance, particularly during strenuous activity, needs evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the effect of the Scott Air Pak (SAP) respirator on maximal treadmill stress test performance.
    • To differentiate the impact of respirator weight versus breathing modes on physiological responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifteen adult males (smokers and non-smokers) performed the Bruce protocol maximal treadmill stress test.
    • Four conditions were tested: no respirator, respirator apparatus only, and respirator with face mask in demand and pressure-demand modes.
    • Work performance, temperature regulation (TFore, Tinsp), and subjective air supply were measured.
