Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the predictive relationship between candidate selection criteria and future performance in surgical training.
  • To identify reliable selection criteria for improving the surgical resident selection process.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE.
  • Over 560 publications were identified and screened using the Cochrane Collaboration Data Extraction and Assessment Template.

Main Results:

  • 57 studies met the inclusion criteria, revealing inconsistent correlations for traditional selection criteria.
  • USMLE scores, Letters of Recommendation (LOR), Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), academic performance, interviews, extracurricular excellence, and unadjusted rank lists showed strong predictive relationships.

Conclusions:

  • The current surgical resident selection process requires significant evaluation and improvement.
  • Multicenter studies with standardized outcome measures are necessary to enhance selection reliability and identify optimal trainees.
