    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Anesthesiology
    • Geriatric Medicine

    Background:

    • Cataract surgery patients are typically elderly with co-existing medical conditions.
    • This demographic profile increases the risks associated with general anesthesia.
    • A significant proportion of patients have pre-existing medical issues or are on treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the incidence of medical disease in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
    • To evaluate the anesthetic morbidity in this patient population.
    • To provide recommendations for improving patient safety during surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of an unselected series of patients undergoing cataract surgery.
    • Review of patient medical histories and treatments.
    • Assessment of anesthetic outcomes and complications.

    Main Results:

    • 53.5% of patients had significant medical problems.
    • 50% of patients were receiving medical treatment.
    • General anesthesia was administered to nearly all patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The high prevalence of medical disease in cataract surgery patients necessitates careful anesthetic management.
    • Routine electrocardiograms are advised for all patients over 60 years of age.
    • Proactive screening can mitigate risks associated with general anesthesia in elderly patients.
