Area of Science:

  • Surgical Innovation
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Endocrine Surgery

Background:

  • Evaluating the feasibility and efficacy of solo-surgeon retroauricular thyroidectomy.
  • Addressing the need for advanced minimally invasive thyroidectomy techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and effectiveness of a solo-surgeon approach for retroauricular thyroidectomy.
  • To compare outcomes with conventional retroauricular thyroidectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized an Endoeye Flex Laparo-Thoraco Videoscope and a Vitom Karl Storz holding system for endoscopic visualization and instrument manipulation.
  • Employed specialized retractors for sternocleidomastoid access in a solo-surgeon setting.
  • Performed the technique on 10 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Main Results:

  • No postoperative complications such as vocal cord paralysis or hematoma were observed in the solo-surgeon group.
  • Operating times and drainage volumes were not significantly different compared to a control group of 100 patients undergoing conventional retroauricular thyroidectomy.
  • The mean patient age was 36.0 ± 11.1 years, with all participants being female.

Conclusions:

  • Solo-surgeon retroauricular thyroidectomy is a safe and feasible surgical option.
  • Competency in endoscopic thyroidectomy is crucial for successful solo-surgeon implementation.
  • The technique offers comparable results to traditional methods, enhancing minimally invasive surgical options.
