Weight loss is a complex, enduring challenge influenced by both hindering and facilitating factors. Understanding these diverse experiences is crucial for developing effective, personalized weight management strategies.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Health Psychology
- Obesity Research
Background:
- Long-term weight management involves distinct stages: weight loss, maintenance, and gain.
- Existing research predominantly focuses on weight-loss maintenance, neglecting the critical weight-loss phase.
- Qualitative understanding of the weight-loss experience is underdeveloped, yet essential for successful long-term management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To qualitatively investigate the weight-loss experiences of individuals outside clinical intervention.
- To understand the naturalistic weight-loss journey and identify key influencing factors.
- To provide insights into the behaviors and experiences necessary for successful long-term weight management.
Main Methods:
- Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 participants (4 with weight-loss and 4 with weight-maintenance experience).
- Thematic analysis using Framework Analysis was applied to interview data.
- The analysis was underpinned by realist meta-theory.
Main Results:
- Weight loss was perceived as a continuous challenge, with dichotomous factors aiding or hindering progress.
- Identified barriers included dichotomous thinking, environmental influences, social pressures, and weight-centeredness.
- Facilitators encompassed mindfulness, knowledge acquisition, exercise, readiness to change, structure, self-monitoring, and social support.
Conclusions:
- Weight loss is a multifaceted endeavor, concurrently affected by physical, social, behavioral, and environmental elements.
- Health professionals require a deeper understanding of dieters' daily challenges for tailored and effective interventions.
- Future research should explore psychosocial consequences, such as social exclusion and spousal sabotage, and flexible treatment approaches.
