This study evaluated a home-based alcohol prevention program for children. The program did not significantly delay the initiation of alcohol use in sixth-grade students.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Child Development
- Substance Abuse Prevention
Background:
- Early initiation of alcohol use is a significant public health concern.
- Home-based interventions are a potential strategy for preventing childhood alcohol use.
- Understanding the effectiveness of such programs is crucial for developing targeted prevention efforts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the efficacy of a mailed, home-based alcohol prevention program ('In control: No alcohol!') in delaying alcohol initiation among sixth-grade children.
- To evaluate the impact of a multi-module intervention delivered over five months compared to a control group receiving informational materials.
Main Methods:
- A cluster randomized controlled trial involving 1349 sixth-grade children and their mothers in the Netherlands.
- Intervention group received 5 mailed modules over 5 months; control group received a factsheet.
- Primary outcome measured was the initiation of alcohol use, with data analyzed using logistic regression.
Main Results:
- Alcohol initiation was observed in 5.4% of children in the intervention group (N=540) and 7.1% in the control group (N=601).
- The difference in alcohol initiation between the intervention and control groups was not statistically significant (OR=.99, p=.52).
Conclusions:
- The 'In control: No alcohol!' program did not demonstrate effectiveness in delaying alcohol initiation in this cohort.
- Further research is recommended to critically evaluate program design and explore effectiveness in different populations.
