Summary

A herpes zoster infection preceded the development of papular skin lesions. Histological examination confirmed these lesions as granuloma annulare in a 57-year-old male.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
  • It typically presents with a painful rash along a dermatome.
  • Complications can include postherpetic neuralgia and, rarely, other dermatological manifestations.

Observation:

  • A 57-year-old male patient presented with papular skin lesions.
  • These lesions appeared five weeks post-herpes zoster infection.
  • The lesions were localized to the right 6th thoracic dermatome, the same area affected by the initial infection.

Findings:

  • Histological examination was performed on the papular skin lesions.
  • The examination revealed characteristic features of granuloma annulare.
  • This suggests a potential link between herpes zoster and the subsequent development of granuloma annulare.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare post-infectious complication of herpes zoster.
  • It suggests that granuloma annulare may occur in a zoster-affected dermatome.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathomechanism and incidence of this association.
