Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation01:20

Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample.

    Area of Science:

    • History of Science
    • Medical Anthropology
    • Visual Culture Studies

    Background:

    • Scientific images possess significant social and emotional influence.
    • A 1962 photomicrograph of a mosquito serves as a case study.
    • The image originated from a laboratory in Tanganyika.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the geopolitical and domestic contexts of scientific image production, consumption, and circulation.
    • To understand the intricate relationship between scientific work and personal lives.
    • To explore the materiality of memory within tropical medicine through the lens of scientific imagery.

    Main Methods:

    • Inspired by anthropological studies on photographic practices.
    • Excavation of diverse geopolitical and domestic contexts surrounding the image.
    • Analysis of the photomicrograph as both a souvenir and an "epistemic thing."

    Main Results:

    • The photomicrograph reveals complex connections between scientific endeavors and lived experiences.
    • Geopolitical and domestic factors significantly shaped the image's journey.
    • The image functions as a material artifact of memory in tropical medicine.

    Conclusions:

    • Scientific images are imbued with social salience and affective power.
    • Understanding the contexts of image creation and use is crucial for grasping scientific practices.
    • The materiality of memory in tropical medicine can be illuminated through the study of scientific photographs.
