Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

4.9K
Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Devices
  • Patient Safety

Background:

  • External ventricular drains (EVDs) are crucial for managing intracranial pressure.
  • EVD dislodgement is a common complication, leading to increased patient morbidity and healthcare costs.
  • Existing methods for securing EVDs can be cumbersome or ineffective.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a simple, reliable, and effective technique for securing EVDs to the scalp.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this technique in preventing EVD pullout complications.
  • To assess the safety and operative time associated with the described fixation method.

Main Methods:

  • A novel operative technique involving hydrocolloid dressings and staples for EVD fixation was developed.
  • A 10-year retrospective analysis of 435 consecutive patients undergoing EVD placement was conducted.
  • Data on EVD pullout complications, fixation-related complications, and operative time were collected and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The EVD pullout complication rate using the new technique was remarkably low at 0.4%.
  • No complications directly attributed to the hydrocolloid dressing and staple fixation method were observed.
  • The median operative time for securing the EVD was only 60 seconds.

Conclusions:

  • The described technique offers a simple, reliable, and safe method for securing EVDs.
  • This approach effectively prevents EVD pullout complications, thereby reducing the need for reimplantation and associated morbidity.
  • This fixation method is efficient, requiring minimal operative time.
