    Summary

Older adults often miss fall risks during daily activities, even when risks are visible. Specific techniques can help assess their situation awareness of fall hazards.

    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Human Factors Engineering
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • Falls are a significant health concern for older adults.
    • Understanding how older adults perceive fall risks is crucial for prevention.
    • Current methods may not fully capture real-world risk perception.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate situation awareness techniques for assessing older adults' perception of fall risk factors.
    • To describe how older adults understand fall risks in everyday activities.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven older adults viewed a video of daily activities with embedded fall risks.
    • Participants answered questions during video pauses to assess situation awareness.
    • Thirteen intrinsic, extrinsic, and behavioral fall risks were included.

    Main Results:

    • Participants identified various potential fall risks but did not always interpret them as such.
    • Some fall risks were perceived with non-fall related meanings (e.g., newspapers as reading material).
    • Only a minority of participants identified fall risk situations without explicit safety prompts.

    Conclusions:

    • Situation awareness techniques can describe older adults' understanding of fall risks.
    • Perception of fall risks does not automatically equate to recognizing danger.
    • Further refinement of assessment methods is needed to improve fall risk identification in older populations.
