Abstract:
Each year, many new diagnostic tests appear on the market that claim to be better, faster, cheaper, less invasive and more reliable than those already available. Diagnostic accuracy studies can assist in the objective assessment of such claims but, unfortunately, important information is often missing from the corresponding study reports. Authors are responsible for the completeness of their study reports, but they may not always be aware of the type of information that needs to be provided for an adequate appraisal of the study. To assist authors in writing informative reports, the STAndards for Reporting Diagnostic accuracy studies (STARD) were recently updated. The aim of STARD 2015 is to improve the ease of use of STARD, while also including several new crucial elements. Future initiatives to improve the uptake of STARD 2015 include the development of extensions for specific fields of testing and tools for specific user groups.
