Gallbladder01:17

Gallbladder

2.8K
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that plays a crucial role in our digestive system. Measuring about 10 cm in length, it is comparable in size to a kiwi fruit and is located in a hollow area on the lower surface of the liver. The gallbladder's primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a fluid produced by the liver that aids in digestion.
The gallbladder's anatomy consists of three regions: the fundus, body, and neck. Extending from the neck, the cystic duct joins...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination01:28

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

4.9K
Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis01:23

Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis

1.0K
Cystic fibrosis (CF), an autosomal recessive disorder, significantly affects the function of exocrine glands. This genetically inherited disease is characterized by the production of thick and sticky mucus, which can severely affect various organs and systems in the body.
CF is primarily caused by a genetic mutation in a chromosome 7 gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. The most common gene mutation leading to CF is the ΔF508 mutation,...

Aneurysm I: Introduction

600
An aortic aneurysm is a localized outpouching or dilation at a weak point in the artery wall. It may involve different parts of the aorta, such as the abdominal aorta, aortic arch, or thoracic aorta.Etiological factorsSeveral disorders are associated with aortic aneurysms.Congenital causes, such as primary connective tissue disorders like Marfan syndrome, impact the integrity and strength of connective tissues, notably affecting the aorta. Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that specifically...

Imaging Studies VI: Voiding Cystourethrography and Cystography

3.3K
Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) and Cystography are specialized radiographic procedures used to examine the structure and function of the bladder and urethra.Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG)A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that assesses the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract. It focuses on the bladder, bladder neck, and urethra, helping detect abnormalities such as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)—the backward or reverse flow of urine into the...

Vesicular Tubular Clusters01:45

Vesicular Tubular Clusters

3.3K
After budding out from the ER membrane, some COPII vesicles lose their coat and fuse with one another to form larger vesicles and interconnected tubules called vesicular tubular clusters or VTCs. These clusters constitute a compartment at the ER-Golgi interface known as ERGIC (Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Intermediate Compartment). The ERGIC is a mobile membrane-bound cargo transport system that sorts proteins secreted from ER and delivers them to the Golgi.
With the help of motor proteins such...

Summary

A congenital canalicular cyst, a newly identified lacrimal drainage system entity, was found. Complete excision is the recommended treatment for this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Anatomy
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • The lacrimal drainage system can present with various congenital anomalies.
  • Distinguishing between different cystic or diverticular lesions is crucial for appropriate management.

Observation:

  • A case report details a 49-year-old male with a left upper eyelid cyst.
  • CT imaging revealed the cyst attached to a bony spicule.
  • Surgical excision confirmed no connection to the lacrimal sac or canaliculus.

Findings:

  • Histopathology showed the cyst was primarily lined by canalicular epithelium.
  • Immunohistochemistry revealed a cytokeratin profile consistent with normal canaliculus and canaliculops.
  • The entity was identified as a congenital canalicular cyst, distinct from diverticula or canaliculops.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the understanding of congenital lacrimal drainage system pathologies.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential as treatment differs: marsupialization for diverticula versus complete excision for cysts.
  • Ophthalmologists should consider this new entity in their differential diagnosis for lacrimal drainage system abnormalities.
