Summary

For intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver resection offers survival benefits comparable or superior to trans-catheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). This review suggests liver resection is a safe and effective option for selected HCC patients.

Background:

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent malignancy, particularly in China.
The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system categorizes HCC into early, intermediate, and advanced stages.
Trans-catheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the BCLC-recommended treatment for intermediate HCC.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the efficacy and safety of liver resection versus TACE for intermediate HCC.
To evaluate the survival benefits of liver resection in early and intermediate HCC stages.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of published studies.
Comparative analysis of survival outcomes between liver resection and TACE.
Assessment of complications and morbidity associated with both procedures.

Main Results:

Liver resection demonstrated superior or comparable survival outcomes to TACE for intermediate HCC.
No significant differences in safety and morbidity were observed between liver resection and TACE.
