Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.1K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.3K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors01:24

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

3.0K
Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the...

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

1.6K
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Strategies of Self-Presentation III: Self-Monitoring

374
Self-monitoring is a central construct in understanding individual differences in self-presentation strategies across social contexts. It refers to how individuals observe, regulate, and control their expressive behavior and self-presentation following situational cues. Self-monitoring reflects a person's sensitivity to social appropriateness and willingness to adapt behavior to fit varying interpersonal demands.High vs. Low Self-Monitoring IndividualsIndividuals high in self-monitoring are...

Five-Factor Theory of Personality01:29

Five-Factor Theory of Personality

2.2K
The five-factor model, often called the Big Five personality traits, is widely accepted in psychology as a comprehensive framework for understanding personality. These five traits — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism — are often remembered using the acronym OCEAN.
Openness reflects creativity, curiosity, and openness to new experiences. Individuals scoring high in openness are imaginative, have a wide range of interests, and are independent...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The exploratory test construction method, advocated by Tellegen and Waller, is a complex process.
  • Scales developed using this method, like the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ), are believed to be more psychologically coherent and robust.
  • This study investigates the robustness of MPQ scales using a novel procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the conjecture that scales constructed via exploratory test construction are psychologically coherent and robust.
  • To assess the structural robustness of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) scales.

Main Methods:

  • A megafactor analysis was conducted on data from 411 adult participants in the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart.
  • Participants completed the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ), the MMPI, and the CPI.
  • 21 factors were extracted and rotated from a correlation matrix of 1,102 nonredundant items using a novel 'recaptured scale technique'.

Main Results:

  • Nine of the 21 extracted factors were clearly recognizable as MPQ scales.
  • Two additional factors represented a bifurcation of an existing MPQ scale.
  • A higher-order factor analysis of the 21 factors revealed five factors resembling the Big Five personality structure.

Conclusions:

  • The findings provide strong support for the exploratory test construction method.
  • The structural robustness of most MPQ scales is confirmed.
  • The study validates the utility of the recaptured scale technique for assessing scale robustness.
