Summary

Inflammation and platelet activity measured early after acute stroke do not predict long-term survival in patients. This finding suggests these factors are not reliable biomarkers for stroke prognosis.

Background:

  • Inflammatory response and platelet activation are linked to mortality in coronary heart disease.
  • The prognostic value of these factors following acute cerebral infarction is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between inflammatory markers and platelet features with long-term survival after acute stroke.
  • To determine if early assessments of inflammation and platelet activity can predict mortality in stroke patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 61 patients hospitalized for acute stroke between 2005 and 2007 was studied.
  • Inflammatory parameters and platelet activity/reactivity were assessed approximately 2 days post-admission.
  • Patient survival was tracked for over 9 years, comparing deceased individuals with survivors.

Main Results:

  • After a mean follow-up of 9.3 years, 29 patients (47.5%) had died.
  • No significant difference was found in inflammatory parameters between survivors and non-survivors.
  • Platelet activity and reactivity also did not differ significantly between the two groups.

Conclusions:

  • Early inflammatory markers and platelet features do not serve as predictors of long-term survival in individuals who have experienced an acute cerebral infarction.
  • These findings indicate that inflammation and platelet function at the time of stroke onset are not useful for forecasting patient prognosis.
