A Western dietary pattern significantly increases colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. Further research is needed on healthy and high-sugar/high-tea patterns in the Jordanian population for CRC prevention.
Area of Science:
- Nutrition Science
- Oncology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Diet and lifestyle are key factors in colorectal cancer (CRC) development.
- The precise mechanisms linking dietary factors to CRC remain unclear.
- This study investigates associations between dietary choices and CRC risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the relationship between specific dietary patterns and the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
- To identify dietary factors that may influence CRC development.
Main Methods:
- Case-control study involving 220 CRC patients and 281 controls.
- Data collected via interview-based questionnaires (2010-2012).
- Multivariate logistic regression analysis used to assess dietary pattern associations with CRC risk.
Main Results:
- Factor analysis identified three dietary patterns: Healthy, High Sugar/High Tea, and Western.
- The Western dietary pattern showed a significant association with increased CRC risk (OR=1.88; 95% CI=1.12-3.16).
- Healthy and High Sugar/High Tea patterns showed non-significant risk reduction for CRC.
Conclusions:
- A Western dietary pattern is directly associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
- Further investigation into the impact of Healthy and High Sugar/High Tea patterns on CRC is warranted in the Jordanian population.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease III: Diagnostic Studies and Management I-Nutritional Therapy
Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
