Effective medication adherence interventions require specific combinations of behavior change techniques. Increasing patient knowledge and self-efficacy emerged as a key strategy, improving adherence in many studies.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Health Services Research
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Medication adherence interventions are complex and diverse.
- Synthesizing evidence on effective interventions is challenging.
- Existing systematic reviews provide a foundation for further analysis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To extend a systematic review on medication adherence interventions.
- To identify necessary or sufficient configurations of behavior change techniques (BCTs) using qualitative comparative analysis (QCA).
- To analyze combinations of BCTs within effective adherence interventions.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from 60 studies from a completed systematic review.
- Examined combinations of nine specific BCTs.
- Applied qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to identify intervention configurations.
Main Results:
- 34 out of 60 studies demonstrated improved medication adherence.
- Increasing patient knowledge was a necessary but not sufficient BCT.
- Seven configurations of BCTs were sufficient for improving adherence, accounting for 76% of effective studies.
- The combination of increasing knowledge and self-efficacy was most relevant, present in 50% of effective studies.
Conclusions:
- Identified multiple effective combinations of BCTs for improving medication adherence.
- Findings provide direction for policymakers, practitioners, and comparative effectiveness research.
- Highlights the importance of tailored BCT configurations for enhancing adherence.
