Summary

This study found a positive association between depression severity and cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) in women. Increased QT dispersion, a measure of CAM, correlated with higher depression scores in mild to moderate cases.

  • Sixty women (37 healthy, 23 with untreated depression) were analyzed.
  • QT dispersion (QTd) and corrected QT dispersion (QTcD) were measured.
  • Depression severity was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS17).

Main Results:

  • QTd and QTcD were significantly higher in depressed women compared to healthy controls.
  • A cubic relationship was observed between HDRS17 scores and both QTd and QTcD.
  • QTd and QTcD increased with depression severity up to an HDRS17 score of 20.

Conclusions:

  • A significant positive relationship exists between depression severity and cardiac autonomic modulation.
  • This association is evident in individuals with mild to moderate depression.
