Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess parental knowledge levels concerning childhood fever.
  • To identify the primary sources of information parents utilize regarding childhood fever.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study was conducted.
  • Data were collected from 360 parents using a questionnaire during child health surveillance consultations in central Portugal.

Main Results:

  • Weak parental knowledge about fever was observed in parents aged 38 years and older, those with partners, rural residents, and those with a ninth-grade education.
  • Conversely, parents up to 37 years old, with partners, residing in urban areas, and possessing higher education demonstrated good knowledge.
  • The primary sources of information for parents were doctors (65.8%) and nurses (50.6%).

Conclusions:

  • Nurses play a crucial role in educating parents about childhood fever management.
  • Targeted educational interventions are needed to improve parental understanding and reduce anxiety associated with childhood fever.
